When Jade began tutoring with me, she was eight years old and in 4th grade, enrolled in a homeschool co-op. Reading challenges were starting to affect both her academics and social confidence.
Her parents were already extremely worried about how far behind she was, even before peer pressure became a factor. That’s when they reached out for help, knowing I specialize in online reading and writing tutoring for homeschool students across the U.S.
As a special education teacher who understands homeschooling, I focus on helping late elementary students who don’t “get” reading, especially those beginning to feel the social pressure of falling behind.
At the time Jade started, she was well below a kindergarten reading level. I used the Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) and informal assessments to evaluate her phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, rhyming, segmentation, and syllable recognition.
My first priority was to build a foundation in phonics, starting with open syllables like in the word “go,” and moving into more complex patterns. Every step was individualized to how Jade learned best.
Within the first 13 weeks, Jade progressed to a late kindergarten reading level. Just as important, her confidence grew. She began recognizing patterns, trying unfamiliar words, and showing curiosity during reading sessions. These small wins laid the foundation for long-term growth.
During the time away from tutoring, I had stepped back to get married and restructure my business. While we were on that break, Jade worked with a well-known mainstream tutoring program. The break lasted about a year. She made some progress during that time, but she was still behind and not yet reading at the level she needed for her age and academic goals.
The program was structured and consistent, but not highly individualized. It offered a general approach rather than one aligned with her current homeschool coursework and learning needs. When Jade returned to tutoring with me, she was entering 5th grade and reading at a beginning 3rd-grade level.
From that point on, her growth was steady and significant. We focused on building her confidence and helping her see herself as a reader. I used real, meaningful texts and supported her in breaking down multisyllabic words as we encountered them. We practiced phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and used comprehension strategies to help her think about and connect with what she was reading. Over time, those tools began to stick, and so did her interest in reading.
At the end of each school year, Jade's mother administered the MAPS Growth Test to track her academic progress. By the time Jade graduated from tutoring, she was reading confidently within the 6th-grade range, an incredible achievement given where she started just a few years earlier.
Not long after, I received a joyful update. Jade had won her 7th-grade science fair competition. The project involved reading, research, writing, and presenting. These skills used to be overwhelming for her. Reading had once been a barrier. Now, it had become a tool she used with confidence and pride.
That win wasn’t just about a ribbon or a grade. It marked a turning point. All the effort, support, and persistence had paid off, and Jade knew it.
Watching Jade grow from age eight to thirteen has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my tutoring career. I had the privilege of witnessing her transform from a hesitant, struggling reader into a confident, independent learner.
Her enthusiasm for reading stayed strong, even after tutoring ended. Seeing her choose to read on her own, enjoy books, and proudly share her writing has been incredibly meaningful. It's moments like these that remind me why I love working with homeschool students who need personalized support and encouragement.
Jade’s parents expressed deep appreciation for the progress she made during our time together. They shared that tutoring helped unlock her ability to read, and they felt hopeful about her educational future for the first time. Watching Jade grow more confident and capable made a lasting impact on their family’s homeschool experience.
If you're a homeschool parent looking for expert support in reading and writing tutoring, I’d love to help your student build confidence and skills. I also offer guidance for parents who are teaching their own children and want support along the way.
